Arroyo Vista’s “Generation Junction”-where the generations are brought together! With thanks to Hitachi, Target Corporation, and Wal-Mart, our program has been able to continue through the 2007/2008 school year!Serving in a time when we are facing high mobility rates, many latchkey students, and situations where some students experience a lack of extended family, it is our goal to bring the generations together. We believe in connecting generations to encourage mutual respect, the sharing of knowledge, and appreciation for life experiences.
Research shows that students improve academically and socially, show an increase in self- worth, and demonstrate motivation to learn when they develop a relationship with a mentor. Research also supports the idea that elders become more productive, have increased self-esteem, and are stimulated both cognitively and socially when given opportunities to interact with children.
Through this program, where seniors are working as tutors to the children, we are seeing the lives and education of the students enhanced by the wisdom, knowledge, and life skills that the more mature generation has to offer and the lives of our older adults made brighter.
The program has been expanded to include all generations! Generation Junction has partnered with Southwestern College to include selected college students from their Teacher Preparation and Service Learning Programs to work on our campus as volunteer interns. The college students earn hours and credits towards their academic requirements by participating as tutors and aides in our classrooms.
If you are a college student, an active older adult, or any generation in-between, and would like to work with children, we need you! Or maybe you know of someone that would be interested. Pass it on! For more information, please call:
